Is your mind giving you tricks or treats?

Are you happy, productive, motivated and fulfilled? Or are you deflated, up and down and tired? We can describe these states as our minds giving us tricks or treats.

Tricks and Treats

When all is well, you might have an organised home, your children are getting to school on time, with homework up to date and meals are planned in advance. You are holding it together at work and even have time and energy for a social life. Even though some testing circumstances might come your way, you still feel strong enough to deal with things and continue to function effectively. Your mind is giving you treats.

At other times you might feel constantly tired and drained. You can’t wait to go to bed and when you get there you haven’t even got the enthusiasm to read or watch TV, you just want to escape the world and sleep. But despite all that sleep you still feel tired and lethargic when you wake up. How frustrating. Because you are tired this affects your mood even further and everything feels difficult. Work is hard and try as you might you are not very productive which just affects your motivation even further. Socialising is a no no as you are in no mood for company and this makes you feel bad for letting people down and not investing in your relationships. You can’t possibly plan your meals and might not even cook anything decent at all which makes you feel guilty for not eating right. The thing is there is nothing in particular you can pin your low mental state on, it is just that way at this time. You can’t explain it and you just don’t know what to do to make yourself feel better.  Your mind is giving you tricks.

You have the power

So can you really control whether your mind gives you tricks or treats? ABSOLUTELY is the answer. As a Hypnotherapist this is what I help people with on a daily basis. You see unless an event is happening to you at that exact moment, all your mind can do is tell you a story. And that story can be based on true evidence or not! And even if it is based on ‘true’ evidence such a s a traumatic event in the past then that ‘truth’ will have been distorted by our subconcious which codes experiences in it’s own way, not factually. And every time the subconcious replays that event it will distort it further. So the minds totally plays tricks.

It always amazes me how much mental anguish people will tolerate before they seek help. And I put this down to people simply not knowing that they can control their mind. I always give my clients tools that they can use themselves simply to control their thoughts and behaviours. We can slip into unhelpful (negative) states very easily but change them into more helpful (positive ones) just as easily.

Some of the techniques I give my clients to help them manage their minds are:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Tapping exercises
  • Self-Hypnosis
  • Hypnosis recordings to listen to

So it might be that the reason that you decided to read this blog is because you suspect something is up with you. Or maybe you are concerned about someone you love or know. There is no ‘type’ or person that is more prone to a negative state of mind than another. And a negative state of mind or depression can happen at any time, with or without a specific set of circumstances. But when it does happen it can really take the wind out of your sails and affect all areas of your life. What you might not realise is that you can actually turn it right around and learn some useful technique to protect your mental health in the future.
